About 5 yrs ago, our healthy family’s health insurance went from $400 a month to $600 a month. No reason, just annual renewal. Our deductible was $10,000, this was no good plan. We had to pay all costs out of pocket until deductible was met. Essentially it was our emergency safety net.

The day I saw that increase, I cried. $600 a month. I went looking for a new policy. I found something in the $250 range. I applied. A week later I learned that myself and my children would be covered, but not my husband. He had high cholesterol. That’s it. Wasn’t even on meds, great just had it in his records. 1/3 of Americans probably have high cholesterol.

We made the very difficult decision to not have health insurance. We are self-employed and cannot get it from work.

Years later, we are covered. This ACA passing is not a victory for us so much, but imagine families who have real issues that need medical attention and hospital stays. I can only imagine how quickly they are denied coverage or kicked off, if something as stupid as one cholestorol score kept my husband uninsured.

There is nothing wrong with helping people and giving everyone the right to access care. This is good work!
